What sweetener does Lion Hydration use?
LION is sweetened with TomorrowSweet™, a protein that tastes like sugar. It is not stevia, monk fruit, sucralose or a sugar alcohol. It is the first taste protein in market, and LION was the first drink to carry it.
What is TomorrowSweet™?
A protein built to taste like sugar, made by Tomorrow Inc., an ingredient design company in San Carlos, California. It starts from brazzein, a sweet protein found in the oubli fruit of West and Central Africa, reimagined so the sweetness arrives when sugar's would and leaves when sugar's would. Version 1.9 is 90% identical to sugar in taste.
Is it a sweetener?
It does a sweetener's job, but it is a protein, not a sweetener molecule. Your tongue reads sweetness through a receptor; TomorrowSweet™ is folded to fit that receptor, so it tastes sweet without being sugar or a sugar substitute.
What does it do in the body?
Your body digests it down to amino acids like any other protein, with no glucose response, no insulin response, and no microbiome effects. It is about a thousand times sweeter than sugar, so a drink uses milligrams of it, which is why it is calorie-free in use.
Does it have an aftertaste?
